The Xhosa people by Armand




This following ethnic group from South Africa, mainly located in Eastern and Western Cape. The total population throughout South Africa raise to 7.8 million.


The Xhosa people was a group from the region around the Great Lakes, who moved south. The Xhosa people were already established in the mid-17th century and occupied most of eastern South Africa.

In the early 18th century the Xhosa people encountered white settlers around Somerset East, then In the late 18th century Afrikaner trekboers migrated outwards from Cape Town and fought with Xhosa pastoralists around the Great Fish River region of the Eastern Cape. Cape. Following about twenty years of conflict with the British Empire, the Xhosas were forced to move to the east.


When it comes to ritual the Xhosa community judges its members if he/she has is place among the group. The newborns go through various graduation stages to determine their place among the community, during each of the stages, the individual is introduced to his counterparts and ancestors.  Before each ritual the individual is trained and prepared by his elders.
